Since 1994 Heart Care International (HCI) has been providing pediatric heart treatment and surgeries to children in developing countries born with heart defects. The high quality evaluation and treatment to children who are in need of heart care is completely free of charge to the patients. The HCI team has saved thousands of children’s lives in Guatemala, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Peru and Mexico.
Heart Care International’s missions have two objectives:
Heart Care International is committed to enhancing the training and expertise of host-country medical staff to help each host-country develop their own self-sustaining pediatric heart care program. HCI’s medical team is made up 100% of volunteers. These tremendous volunteers give a week+ of vacation time in order to travel and help these vulnerable children born with congenital heart defects (CHD). The surgical results are outstanding, consistent with the results achieved in the finest centers in the United States. Heart Care International’s partnerships with the host-country medical teams not only impacts the children on each mission, but also results in the host country’s development of a sustainable pediatric cardiothoracic program.
Healing Hearts with Custom BearsHeart Care International gives each tiny patient a branded Heart Care Bear as a sweet and practical gift. The children absolutely love the bears! Not only do these custom bears provide emotional comfort, but hugging the bear actually helps to HEAL the chest muscles after surgery. As these brave little patients hold the bear closely and tight to their chests, their stitches are held in place and physical pain lessons. The Heart Care Bear will stay with the child through their recovery at the hospital, and eventually journey home with them as a keepsake!
Along with the bear, the parents are given a handbook on “Healing Your Child's Heart." This contains basic care and treatment information for children born with heart defects. It covers signs/symptoms, testing, medications, caring for the child before and after surgery, and basic anatomical diagrams to help the parents navigate through this difficult chapter.

The future of Heart Care International includes technology-enabled permanent real-time consultations, training and care for the world’s children who are most in need.
They plan on continuing to order their snuggly “Heart Care Bears” annually to help keep up the spirits and the hearts of their young patients.
